Not much bigger than 30 square miles, and with a maximum elevation of only 3 metres above sea level, Fanning Island is not a place for the faint-hearted to inhabit. It is primitive living with little cooking resources, basic huts and limited access.
What Fanning Island does have in abundance is truly spectacular flats fly fishing. Double digit Bonefish, Giant or Bluefin Trevally and other species, all available on the fly, wading and casting on endless flats for up to 10 hours a day for a week.
HOST & GUIDES ONHAND
Only 6 fishermen can fish on the island with Fanning Island Outfitters per week with a 1 to 1 local guide ratio. We’ve checked the moon, evaluated the tides, and have booked in a 10 day run when we, and the local chief guide, reckon the bones will hopefully be at their best.
In early September 2024, six lucky anglers will have a week on the island plus a few days on Kiribati to chase some GT’s and more bonefish before we depart. We got commitments from a couple of local anglers the minute we discussed it over a beer, so we reckon this will book out quickly.

14 NIGHTS / 11 DAYS FISHING
Our 2024 rate includes your lodging for 7 nights on Christmas Island & 7 nights on Fanning Island, all meals, a couple of bottles of water each day, return flights to & from Fanning Island, all airport transfers, and one guide per angler. What’s not included are your international flights and related charges, alcohol and other drinks (it’s BYO!), your local fishing license, plus gratuities and departure tax. LOCATION AT A GLANCE
New Zealand and Australian anglers fly to Christmas Island (Kiritimati, CXI) via Nadi airport in Fiji. Our USA-domiciled clients will meet us at CXI, flying via Honolulu, Hawaii. After a one night stayover on Kiritimati, we take a one hour, ten minute scenic flight to Fanning Island (Tabuaeran) for 6 days of trophy bonefishing, parrotfish, wrasse and trevally. We then head back to Christmas Island for another week of fishing, targeting giant trevally (GT’s), milkfish, mid-sized bonefish and other species.
